Thanks for answering everyone’s questions.
I’ve tried to source a plastic product on Alibaba, but they keep saying that they need to make a mould in order to make the product which costs anywhere from $3500 to $8000, then you have to pay for the actually product being made from the mould on top of that.
The same thing happened when I tried to source a metal product.
Is this normal when sourcing metal or plastic products?
Does this mean it is better to source products that are made from wood or textiles, in order to avoid investing in an expensive mould that may not even be profitable?
If you want to create your own unique product than yes, you would need to pay for a mould. Not sure how complex your product will be, but $8k sounds like a lot for a plastic mould. Always make sure to request quotes from multiple suppliers.
If you are unsure about this investment you can also start with straight up private labeling. So picking an existing product and slapping your own brand (label) on it. Once successful you can then start to invest in your own mould.
